The Role

Cycle Toronto is hiring for new Cycling Educators to add on to our existing cohort of dedicated Cycling Educator independent contractors. Cycling Educators are service providers engaged in assisting at various outreach events hosted by Cycle Toronto such as Bike Month and the Big Toronto Bike Ride. As well, Cycling Educators support a variety of programs, workshops and initiatives such as: cycling workshops, canvassing, bike engagement stations, Learn to Ride, Bike Valet, Bike Match etc. Individuals with CAN-Bike and/or bike mechanic experience are encouraged to apply. Cycling Educators will liaise with Cycle Toronto staff and report to the Programs Manager.

Cycle Toronto is a member-supported charity that has been leading the change to help build a healthier, more vibrant cycling city since 2008. We work to create access to cycling, build support for cycling infrastructure, and help foster a culture of cycling in Toronto. We are a non-partisan organization that engages a diversity of people in our work pursuing evidence-based solutions to make riding a bike a safer, more convenient option for more people.

Key Responsibilities

Bike Engagement Stations / Events 

  • Cycling Educators support bike engagement stations across the city that provide safety checks to people passing by with their bikes, handing out information about Cycle Toronto, and cash handling for donations and merchandise sales
  • Support during events including (but not limited to) Bike Valet, Bike Match, various farmers markets, Get Lit! campaign, and the Big Toronto Bike Ride, Cycle Toronto’s annual fundraiser 

Community Rides 

  • With training, Cycling Educators ensure the safety of participants during community group rides by being familiar with a route, guiding and marshalling

Cycling Workshops

  • Cycling Educators deliver safe cycling and bike maintenance workshops to the general public or business clients. Workshops are held online and in person
  • Workshops are generally scheduled during weekday lunch hours and evenings, or on weekends. Workshops are tailored to the experience level of attendee

Qualifications

  • Able to ride a bike and access to a working bicycle which conforms to the requirements of the Highway Traffic Act
  • Fluent written and spoken English
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team
  • Access to a personal computer and comfort using video conferencing software for delivery of workshops
  • Commitment to working within an anti-oppression framework
  • Generally available to work evenings and weekends

Assets

  • Written and spoken fluency in other languages especially those in the Toronto Cycling Handbook
  • Living in or around the following areas: 
    • Scarborough Southwest, 
    • East York / Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park, 
    • Weston-Mount Dennis / York South-Weston,
    • Rexdale / Etobicoke North, Humber River-Black Creek, York Centre,
    • Southwest Etobicoke
  • Emergency First Aid / CPR certification
  • Strong skills in bicycle maintenance and repair
  • CAN-BIKE 4 or above

Terms of Contract

  • Independent contractor from April 2026 to March 2027
  • Must be able to work holidays and weekends
  • Reports to the Programs Manager
  • Compensation: Cycling Educators will be paid at a rate of $25.00 per hour.
