Our city is still facing a crisis in road safety. I'm riding to make a difference, and generate awareness of the need to transform Toronto into a road safety leader.
I’m an avid, all-year-round commuter cyclist. I believe cycling is truly the most efficient way to get around this town. It's healthy, it's efficient, it's environmentally sound, but it could be significantly safer -- for everyone. On Sept 21 I'll join dozens of other Toronto cyclists in support of Cycle Toronto, and to advocate for improvements to our cycling infrastructure, more protective policies and more automated enforcement. In May 2018, my friend and coworker's husband was killed riding to work in a preventable cycling accident here in Toronto. One year later, she too died, suddenly, of cancer. Their two young adult children have experienced unspeakable loss. I'm riding for the Crosbie family, and in memory of my friend, Christine. I'm also riding for my 4 year old son, who has already mastered his own little bone shaker. I want to feel confident that he'll be safe and protected as he learns how to ride around this town. We need safe streets for all vulnerable users, be they children, cyclists or pedestrians. There are vast improvements to be made: better street designs, traffic systems and policies that have proven themselves all over the world. We need them here, now, to save lives, encourage healthier lifestyles and improve livability in and mobility around our congested city. Thank you for your support!
